We've had a lot of wonderful little period French boxes, trinket stands, watch and sewing boxes from this era, always popular with collectors. I have never seen a pair of full-sized candle holders before now. Perhaps they originally held glass flutes/epergne for flowers, but theyâre wonderfully designed to hold a pair of candles as you can see. The bee's wax candle shown with them is a full-size taper, 5/8" base and 11+" long. They're sturdy with a candle, so elegantly crafted with weighted base. All original, you see they have the old paper base and all shells. The upper 3 half shells that form the cup around the snake-like brass coil into which your candle rests are cut and incised as leaves.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. Sturdy, no wiggle at all. All of the half shells are complete and the ormolu is brilliant gold alloyed and beautifully designed. They stand 6" tall without candles, on a sturdy base of 3" x 2" oval natural shell, weighted. Just one tip missing but it doesnât hurt the aesthetic or use at all. RARE set. If you've got a collection of these old French shell items, you MUST have this pair!
