An exceptionally fine find, this stunning TAHAN, (Paris) signature double well tea caddy in finest old woods and craftsmanship combined. The name, TAHAN, which you see engraved there on the lock plate of this chest, represents the finest of the 19th century French ebenistes, ebaniste, (cabinetry makers) arts. The finest of the finest of makers, and "a' la Roy", or to the King, designates their status as well. Makers to the Kings and Queens of their time. The rarity here, on a secondary basis, is that this is a tea caddy. The English made tea caddies galore. The French, more aligned to the chocolate and coffee beverages and services, made very few containers for tea. This must have been a direct commission. Alas, we don't have the history of this fine chest to tell us for whom it was made. Look it over. The elegant design which incorporates the favorite boulle style of the Napoleon III era, and the fine quality moulded border trim are set off beautifully with the brass stringing. Inner covers and the tea press insert lids are all intact and remain with the chest. Only the key is missing. And we'll do our best to fit a key to it but at listing it is being sold keyless, and priced same.

Very good to excellent condition, I see only a small surface imperfection there on the lid, at about the 9 o'clock position to the left of the cartouche. Otherwise, really quite an exceptionally well preserved box in total. The old original foil lining is mostly intact within, and the tea press covers and compartment covers are all still with the box. All boulle inlays are well set and flush, none missing. Raised on a fine set of bun feet cast in brilliant more bronze, still retain their shine. The working lock needs a key. We'll keep looking for one to fit. Measurements noted on the photos, also, but it is 9.25" x 5" and is 5.25" high when closed.
