The painting is not perfect, but her face is. The canvas has been salvaged from what would have been a rectangular frame with an oval aperture. You can see what I mean. Perhaps removed from frame and stretcher, taken along as French politics caused upheavals, particularly among Royalists. Our indication this woman belonged to that group is seen in the drape of a red shawl. In that time, representing the blood of those whose fate was met at the guillotine. These Royalists fled France with scant of their possessions, carrying jewels and silver (if possible) and rolled canvas portraits of family, to be re-stretched and reframed. This is the backstory of this one. The flaws you might see tell the tale of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic era. I've kept her as a favorite for a couple decades, hung just as she is. An imperfection in form of a push to canvas can be seen best when lighted from the side, which I've done to try to highlight such imperfections, remembering the upheaval and travel they represent. The outer corners beyond the oval portrait are painted but meant to be hidden by the proper frame. It's tempting to reduce the painting canvas (linen) and stretch on a smaller stretcher frame, but one would not want to lose the red shawl. Perhaps have the outer sections painted to extend the portrait, and then frame her. I have loved her just as you see her.
