A superb Napoleonic French Empire frame, it's oil painting long lost, the frame is ready for a mirror or your own painting of your choice. Or even a large photo. This is authentic old French Empire, Napoleon's era. I'm dating it c.1810, give or take 10 years. Normally these have losses to the appliques of plaster or gesso, but this one is complete. You can see that it's got a rust colored undercoat and either applied gold enamel or gold leaf beautifully done on top of the undercoat layer. The process is one for gold leaf, and helps the leaf to have high gold lustre. I've been collecting French Empire frames for decades. Only the finest ones. I'll be clearing them from our warehouse over weeks and months ahead. This is one of the finest of them all. Some have swans, other Napoleonic relief. Don't miss any of them! (all sold separately).
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. Normally these have much more loss. This one is as close to perfect as they come. You've seen them priced enormously in Paris. They're very popular for mirrors now in French decor, or fine homes. While I wish they'd leave the old oil paintings in them, they seem most often to separate and sell the painting apart from the frame. Frankly, a wall of empty frames of this type is magnificent, so you might not even want to fill it with a mirror. Just pick a place and begin collecting. The measurements are clearly noted on the photos. I've shown front, back, corners, all the appliques. A magnificent museum quality French frame. The view is 17 5/8” x 14.5” and the inner rabbit area is 18.5” x 15 3/8”.
