Large 11.75" tall 19th century Staffordshire spill vase, English traditional charming pottery so popular for your English Manor house decor. The statue is in excellent unbroken and in nearly undamaged condition, is 7 1/4" wide and 2 5/8" deep front to back. Hand painted pottery. A "spill", for anyone who doesn't recognize that term, was the long rolled up paper 'wand' that was used in the 19th century to start fires in fireplace or wood stove. The vases like these were mantel vases and at the ready, holding the long rolled paper tubes.
Very good condition for age and type. A few paint chips visible on the backs of the gents' arms and there is an old original firing fissure in the back of the right side gent's cap. There is also a base edge chip near front center. A lovely old one with the popular cavalier style gentlemen and center quintessential red & white Staffordshire spaniel. Charming. The piece weighs 2 lbs, 12 oz.
