Recently acquired an entire collection of fine early to mid-1800s cigar cases and weâll list each one separately for sale. Look for them all, though. The entire collection is just fabulous! From hand embroidered ones to one favorite of mine with hand carved antler stag on front, to a splendid old shagreen case, to a host of others that would be wonderful gift ideas along with a tin of Davidoff cigars (or other) for your favorite friends who enjoy one now and then. Iâll be brief in describing each one, but theyâve come to us out of Paris and from the estate of a noted (and titled) collector who chose to remain anonymous. Wish we could disclose. Spectacular, this mid-1800s French cheroot case (small cigars) remains in such beautiful form after some 170 years. Surely must have been treasured. The inlay work is called pique and is so intricate as a decorative craft, one canât help but be thrilled by it. And if we acid test, weâll find that it is 18k gold in 2 colors and sterling silver that was used to inlay the case. Quite often also mother of pearl and in this case two of the small flowers are pearl. A child cartouche set into the reverse side is not yet monogrammed and can be done for you as an heirloom dedication or with your own monogram. Interior is the old original silk fabric with white piping on edging, and it shows us some darkening that suggests it was closed up with moisture. The silk is in good form, but is stained by the dark something, 19th c. mildew suspected (no odors). Still, such a beautiful old case for use or display.
Very good condition on exterior and good but stained interior silk lining. No chips, no cracks, no losses to the wonderful pique inlay work. Fine satin polish to the exterior case. Some corrosion to the silver plating of frame at interior near the hinge panel. Hinge and clasp working perfectly. Such a gorgeous little case, unusual in cigar cases for being the small cheroot case size. Measurements noted on the photos.
