Antique Grand Tour era 5 5/8" micro mosaic picture frame with ornate raised or 3-D floral decoration and unique painter's palette shape! The entire piece is covered in a colorful array of flowers & foliage, created with separate glass tesserae and raised against the white mosaic mat. We have a number of really fine mid-late 1800s Italian micromosaic frames to list, each of which dates between c.1860-1900, and would have been Grand Tour souvenirs to that very early era of travelers who visited Italy. The mosaic is entirely worked in tiny bits of colored glass called "tesserae" and these are spectacular. Come and see! This one is in shape of an artist's palette, a popular form in Victorian era, and is set with bouquets of colored glass florals, all intact in this frame. Very good condition, age considered. The oval glass view is a replacement with somewhat rough edges. I see no missing or replaced tesserae tile and, as you can see in the images, it's just gorgeous! The brass backing is also a replacement, it appears that the back of the frame has been painted with gold colored paint and the lower tab to hold the backing is missing but the two remaining work just fine.
