Very likely one of a pair of mantle garnitures originally made and matching a huge 19th century Black Forest clock, the size of this piece makes it perfect to turn into a lamp. We've done so with other pieces like this and it's such an easy project with such fabulous resulting decor. Yes, you might settle for using it for a candle a bit larger than a taper, and that would also be fun. It is likely it once held a glass base kerosene lamp inset.  Definitely 19th century and a superb anatomical carving. The ram is a full 8" tall, himself. Large and solidly balanced base - it really does beg to become an electric lamp with beautiful shade. Full measurements are noted on the photos.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type, we found this one in France recently. As you can see, there is slight loss, one of the goat's horns is a partial, and the ear of the baby goat has been lost. Otherwise, though, a spectacular piece.  Aminalier movement anatomical study carved by some Master Swiss carver, but I do not see a signature. Lots of photos, I'm sure you'll agree as you look it over.
