Spectacular antique Victorian era Grand Tour style papier mache double playing card or gaming box with large "eglomise" or reverse painted glass scene entitled "Warwick Castle"!  Isn't this one simply magnificent!  Just in from France though it's an English piece, the base marked for the maker Lane of Birmingham that, as you can see, ranks right up there with Jennens & Bettridge where these museum quality papier mache works are concerned.  Exceptional detail, fantastic condition and one of the more visually impressive that we've had in some time.  Warwick Castle is a medieval castle developed from a wooden fort, originally built by William the Conqueror during 1068. Warwick is the county town of Warwickshire, England, situated on a meander of the River Avon. The original wooden motte-and-bailey castle was rebuilt in stone during the 12th century.  Surely an old gaming or playing card box, the interior is partitioned to hold two decks and, possibly, game counters in the center.  Rare, beautiful, don't miss it!

Very good to excellent condition.  A tiny bit of cracking to the sky portion of the painting but the entire piece is in truly remarkable condition, age and materials considered.  There is a small chip to the rear right base corner area.  It does have a key but the key does not turn the lock.  See pictures for all measurements.
