Rare c.1750-70s French scent caddy, traveler's etui or necessaire entirely hand decorated in the manner known as Vernis Martin (varnish Martin), which was a layering of paint and varnish which captured the heart of Marie-Antoinette in particular, and left us with some surviving objects like this one. French Romantic Era, 19th century. Full measurements noted on photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. Typical in this format, 2 small scent flasks (flacon) a writing tablet and a stylus or pencil, with a center post which should be fitted with a tiny funnel (missing in this one). One silver cap also missing but both stoppers are intact. Some restoration on the paintings which were completed on a shagreen suface over wood form etui. The hinged not pad has 1 small hairline on 1 of the 2-panels, tip of stylus missing lead pencil. Final photo shows it with other rare Vernis Martin decorated objects, all but the coin purse dating to 18th century. Coin purse in 19th century, Vernis Martin revival period, c.1850s, all sold separately.
