The elegant old Cathedral of Strasbourg, wheel engraved on the top panel of this Grand Tour souvenir sugar caddy, c. 1830-50. With fabulous wheel engraved representations of the architectural icons of the Bohemian spa, this superb early 1800s sugar caddy comes to us as well preserved as any I've ever seen, museums included. In Prague there is a wonderful museum dedicated to the decorative arts, and within it is a large room filled with the most elegant old Moser and Bohemian glass works. I remember seeing a box very like this one there. The artist is not named here, but is Egermann, called after the inventor of the decorating technology, Mr. Friedrich Egermann (1777 - 1864). The quality is superb, the architectural renderings are crisp and perfectly done. Two front and back, one on each side panel and one on the top of the box makes 7 in all - each a famed spa in the Czech/Bohemia regions of Europe.
Very good for age and type, you can see there are no chips nor cracks, breaks, but there are a few scratches through the ruby glass layer, more prominently on the top and on the edges of the bevel cuts. This is quite typical of these old ones, and this one would date mid-1800s or earlier. A Grand Tour souvenir of fine quality. We have other Egermann ruby flash souvenir items. Look for those sold separately. Measurements on the photos.
