Hand carved c. 1880s, Swiss/German Black Forest souvenir trade item, a smoker's caddy with fox robbing hen's nest of eggs. Entirely carved of a single piece of wood, exceptional detail and anatomy on the fox (missing tip of one ear) with long bushy tail and cautious but stealth pose. It seems obvious there was once a lid (see inner recess ledge for one) and likely for a pipe smoker's pouch and matches. Perfect now to display or to serve any size cigars. Full measurements noted on photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, I find one chip at tip of fox's ear closest to front view. No other chips. As mentioned, I think it was originally made with a fitted lid, but that has gone missing through the ages. Remarkable condition for age!
