Complete with lock and key, original inkwell, original claret red velvet writing surface, this charming old Victorian lap desk or slope isn't perfect, but it certainly displays beautifully and hides its few flaws well. The inlays of mother of pearl shimmer in light, but would have once been painted. The mother of pearl pushed light through the surface painting and made it brighter and shimmer with back-light color. But paint dow not stick well to pearl, so most of these Victorian era papier mache boxes and goods no long have painted flowers. The pearl marquetry is lovely, however, and there are no missing pieces.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. I've included detail photos of any loss or imperfection for your review. Hinges work well, lock is functional and has its key, the old inkwell doesn't want to open, so you see it has residue of ink within. The fabulous original red silk satin writing surface is all there, but has deteriorated at the fold from use and is split there as you can see. The inside pen tray and compartment cover remains. A lovely old one, c.1850s.
