One of several charming 19th century souvenir items being listed today, back-painted glass (eglomise) views of monuments of Paris, this one being Notre Dame Cathedral, is a personal favorite. Erected as a feature of the 1889 Paris Expo, this box shows th eEiffel Tower and the entire 1889 Expo grounds extending throughout the Champ du Mars. Everyone loves this iconic monument of Paris. Initially thought of as the ugliest monstrosity (by the French), it has come to be so loved and such an icon of Paris, everyone visits it still. Full measurements noted on photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. This c.1880s deep beveled glass and pressed brass souvenir box is without a single tiny chip. All 5 panels are free of loss, even to tiny and quite usual nips to the deep bevel ridge. Lovely condition! This one has a mirror-like lid interior, and even retains the padded silk bottom pad-lining. Legs and frame are all in fine order and hinge and clasp work fine. Charming (and rare to find) subject.
