High fashion of the 1790s in France among the wealthier and titled crowd, this pair of watercolor portraits are just superb! Original art works, neither artist signature nor ID of the couple attends the large format portrait miniatures (faces are 2", chin to hairline). She wears the large pouffed up lace bonnet with blue ribbon, and he wears a powdered wig. French Revolution era, so many changes taking place in France at this time. It's quite possible this couple were living in exile for their safety. They remain in original gilded wood frames, one of which (hers) has been broken and repaired (see photos). Full measurements noted on the photos.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type, these are gouache paintings on heavy card, slightly out of the ordinary for the era, and very beautifully done. Each one pleasant, full of dignity and style of their era. The paintings are excellent. The frames are quite wonderful, though hers has a break that has a very old repair to it, which is completely stable and adds a mysterious aura - could they have been broken in a hasty exit from France by them and their families? Some of my favorites!
