Just in from France, and it's either French or Bohemian - both made similar items mid-1800s, with thick impasto enamel paintings, decoration. This one is just gorgeous, "electric" blue glass, formed in the 2 halves then mounted with a nice heavy brass base and hinged fitting with clasp. The box is just over 3" square and with the little brass cabriole legs, rises 3 1/4" when closed. Charming little chick on the lid picks after a bug on the white ground while a bird flies overhead. Garlands of white flowers decorate all 4 sides in a continuous motif. Perhaps the most wonderful aspect of this one is the condition.

Very good to excellent condition, I cannot find a single tiny rough edge, let alone a chip. The kiln-fired enamel paintings throughout are also complete and without chips or loss. Brass mounts are in fine form and very well crafted. The closure is smooth and even. Broad polished bevel edges and angles play with the light. Just beautiful in display.  My photos do not do it justice. I found it in France.
