This was in a lot purchased to acquire other portrait miniatures at auction. The oval miniature under original beveled and polished 200-yr old cover glass and likely out of a gold or jewelry locket-type mount, has been set into an unusual rectangular mat of striped old silk, and into a rather heavy solid wood frame. It appears there is dust under the glass. We have no identity on this handsome young man, and there is no signature, but with experience and knowledge of fashion, he's easy to put a date to. A bit unusual, but appealing, and might be fun as wall art for a doll house arrangement.
Good to very good for age and type, this portrait is accomplished by an unnamed artist, c.1830s, in gouache on thin wafer, protected under original beveled and polished cover glass. Frame is heavy old wood, great character to it, and age. The portrait is mounted from the front, I think, though I didn't try to open the back, which is covered in what appears to be hand painted paper.
