Signed only with an MM, this superb small painting is truly a fine work of art. That face is only 5/8" from chin to rim on his cap. While it is in the typical c.1800 frame of French portraits, it is very likely Prussian, either a Russian boy or perhaps Austro-Hungarian. We don't have his identification. Perhaps someone with more understanding of the costume he wears can help us identify his heritage, if not him. TIA.
Very good to excellent condition, as you can see. A superbly crafted small painting, gouache on wafer, and housed perfectly under the original convex cover glass and within the 200+ year old frame. All measurements are noted on the photos.
