Isn't she magnificent! Signed by the artist and dated 1812. This girl, somewhere between 10-12 years of age, dressed in what might be her first grown-up Empire gown with low bodice and Empire waist. Demure and with such soulful big beautiful eyes, she is a picture of innocence in a time of great upheaval in France. We know she's French, as she holds the little iris which is the French fleur de-lys, National flower. This would be significant because it ties her line to that of the Bourbon Royals who were displaced in the 1789 French Revolution. In 1812, Napoleon's expansion is nearing it's end, and it is the year of the French invasion of Russia. His story would be over in a couple of years. The Royalists still held hope France would be returned to Royal lineage. This young girl would have seen the end of Napoleon and the Restauration period of the final King of France if she survived into her 20s. Alas, I digress. She wears a generous bead necklace and earrings of red coral. That, too, is a symbol. Red coral was believed to have protective qualities, particularly for young girls, and relates to myths of Medusa's blood. All in all, a masterful portrait in an outdoor setting which was popular in this era. One of my favorites. A unique frame in brass over wood, which might be an indication her family of Royalists were among those who fled France in those decades. Measurements are noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. Signed by the artist, which I've shown. I haven't made out the writing so can't research our artist on this splendid miniature. The wafer and painting are excellent. Artist has backed her neck and face with a foil to reflect a little more light and glow to the girl's skin tones. Original slightly convex cover glass, a very old silk velvet mat and the unique wooden frame with a repoussé and engraved brass covering is also in very fine condition.
