Popular in the French Romantic Era, Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette's era, these charming old bonbon, or snuff box examples are made from amber-colored or blond horn, and are intricately decorated by inlays of tiny stars, dots, and the cartouche of a floral basket, various metals including 18k gold, sometimes brass or silver accent. This is a larger sized one, as you can see from those shown in my final group image. More opaque than not, the coloration ranges. I am going to admit this one (or the cloudy day) has not photographed nearly as pretty as it is in reality. Perhaps we'll do photos over when the natural light is better. Full measurements noted on photos.

Very good to excellent condition, I don't see a single pique dot lifted, lost, though if I missed one tiny one it will have been because it's just mesmerizing to think of a goldsmith cutting tiny pique, carving recesses for each, and installing them for a flat and shimmering beautiful surface. In its time this one would have been considered table snuff size, larger than most. It is true that these gained popularity about 100 years later and more were produced. I do think this is early rather than later, however. Very fine work! Some say this is reconstituted horn, pulverized so it can be worked with molds and cuts. You can barely see the slab joint on side - that is not a crack, but where the steamed softened horn has been joined. Beautiful craftsmanship.
