Very old! This is an 18th century case I've had for decades, trying to figure out what it was once made to hold. Somewhat similar to the 18th century shagreen cases which held navigating or drafting tools, it is an unusual shape and size. Likewise, rather than sharkskin as the leather (black shagreen, some call it, though shagreen is really belly skin of the stingray) - I feel quite sure this is leather from elephant. I've had and seen a few 19th century purses which turned out to be elephant leather and this leather has more the look of those than of shark or shagreen. I am not entirely positive, however. Since it's time to disburse things I've hung onto for decades, this one came to my worktable and it seems perfect as a cigar case, though I'm certain that was not its original purpose. Large, measurements noted on the photos.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type, the case is exceptionally well-preserved. Quite beautiful and unique, I have shown it with Davidoff cigars which are about 4 1/2" long, there is room inside for longer cigars. Full measurements noted on the photos. Hinge and clasp are each working as they should. The only rough spot on the elegant leather is there at the hinge, very small. The brass pique mount of hardware is typical of 17th century cases and adds design aesthetic.
