One of the most elegant large plaques ever, we found this one while in France recently. An open game pouch carved into it suggests it served as a spill holder (the rolled paper wands used to light candles from a fireplace, or vice-versa). The 19th century carving is signed by the artist/carver, sculptor (I've shown it enlarged and in detail, yet am not certain of who it is). A magnificent composition of hunger's rifles, powder horn and game pouch overlaid with a small and well-muscled buck and a superb anatomical carving of a game hen. The addition of oak leaves and acorns and the depth of the bas relief scene makes it a stunning work of carver's art. French Country, English Manor, cabin or hunt lodge - or just in your library or den. Imagine what it would cost to have it carved today - if you could.  Full measurements are noted on the photos. Enjoy the fine detail!

Very good to excellent condition for age and type, we rarely see the 19th century carvings without some loss, usually a whole lot more than this one has. I can point out loss at the legs of the game hen, one antler and one ear, a little chipping at the rim of the open game pouch - flaws that fade into the splendor of the fine anatomical studies this artist has left us from a century and a half ago. A fabulous autumn addition to any decor. Don't leave it with me too long or it'll find its place on walls of one of my own homes - even though I am supposed to be downsizing. It's hard! So many beautiful old treasures!
