Likely a child's sewing set, it's remarkable to find it in such excellent and apparently unused condition. The gold-embossed leather-clad folding box has a fabulous French niello enameled clasp, and opens to reveal a full set of sewing tools, scissors, thimble, late-turned wood needle case and stiletto, and 6 lathe-turned rosewood thread spools. Additional to the set is the original matching waxer, and the mirror in the upper compartment (sorry, it's dirty in photos but got cleaned after - is lovely). The silk pad lines the inner side of the folding case. Full measurements are noted on the photos. NOTE: The silk embroidery against which the set is shown is not included - just a nice prop for photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. We'd date this one c.1830-50 and it was likely first purchased through boutique at the famed Palais Royal, the old Palace of Cardinal Richelieu, just a stone's throw from the Louvre, Paris. I see nothing to report as damage. Slight split to interior fold, and a foxing to some edges of the outer case, visible on photos. The heavy gold embossed front and back are gorgeous against the claret red case. Clasp is elegant and fully functional.
