Spectacular large travel chest (trousse de voyage) from the boutiques flanking the garden of the Palais Royal, c. 1818, the set is complete but for 1 item: drinking cup which would have rested in that front left corner, and into which a sheathed and silver vermeil covered jar nests. You'd hardly even notice it, just that the size opening indicates it. We have:

  • 2 silver & 18k gold (vermeil) capped inkwells
  • 2 sterling & 18k gold (vermeil) covered vanity jars (round)
  • 1 sterling & 18k gold (vermeil) covered vanity jars (long rectangle)
  • 2 sterling & 18k gold (vermeil) covered scent bottles (rectangle)
  • 2 covered glass vanity jars
  • 1 ebony vial, mother of pearl and 18k gold lid
  • 1 sterling & 18k gold (vermeil) perfume funnel
  • 1 sterling & 18k gold (vermeil) eye wash cup
  • 1 ebony sealing wax holder with seal matrix end, vermeil, MOP top
  • 4 perfect mother of pearl snowflake silk winders
  • 2 perfect mother of pearl spool with gold metallic thread
  • 1 mother of pearl and 18k gold thimble
  • 1 mother of pearl and 18k gold scissors
  • 1 mother of pearl and 18k gold needle case
  • 1 mother of pearl and 18k gold stiletto
  • 1 mother of pearl bodkin (ribbon threading needle)

Our many photos show it well, but it is really just stunning in person. So rare to find without losses, damage. Even the old mirror with easel stand is still there and not broken. Some age to its silvering, visible. I see I have no photos of it outside the box. It has a cream silk satin backing and covered stand that are in very fine condition. I do not think that ric-rac is original. Probably had some other border. The interior is in very nice condition. Obvious that this has been an unused treasure, or perhaps in museum for its couple of centuries, or simply stuck in the treasure trove closets of a longtime family chateau.  On the outside of the chest, I've drawn your attention to a couple of insets in the old wood. I'm not sure when or why that might have been done. Both handles are intact, strong, working, and are steel. Overall, one of the layered old cases we love to find.  It won't last long. Don't miss it.

We hope to determine the silversmith for this one. We've shown it clearly. We've checked our online go-to, and our own French silver marks books and did not find it. I will say, the vermeil on this set is pristine. No loss. No dents. Each piece is superb. Very slight nip and a flash to the glass, have shown the 'big' one on the long rectangular box, and it's about 3/16th inch, inner upper rim, doesn't even show on level. A fine set, indeed!
