Ernest Rees, famed maker of elegant French fans, 9, Boulevard des Capucines, Paris, address. E. Rees fans are shown in collections in many museums, and the variations in them are quite impressive. The box is original to this charming fan, and the signature also appears on the back, on the bone stick (see images). Silk organza, entirely hand painted, the fan is in the forme ballon, elongated to the center; when folded the guard sticks do not extend the entire length of the fan. I think I missed measurements on the photos, sorry. The fan is 6 1/2" for guard sticks and 8 1/2" for the fan in total. It opens to 12" in width, but also over 8" in height.
Good to very good condition, excellent on the sticks and guards, which are bone, elongated striations not easy to see, but they are there. No breaks or flaws to the bone, and it's beautifully crafted. The old silk organza leaf has a split or two at fold, not too bad but needs mention. And additionally there is a stain, fully visible on the old fan. I have done nothing at all to clean or to try to clean the fan nor leaf. The portrait miniature is either Marie-Antoinette or one of her Courtiers, and is very nicely done. I'm not a fan expert, so will leave you with our photos.
