A quite unique double portrait miniature 18th century snuff box, black Vernis Martin and shell-lined pristine snuff or patch box. From a note inside, they are brothers - a keepsake one or the other kept close and treasured. The note speaks of "abbi de la Drourin the same as that of (porchant?)  and his brother". The one to left in the fashion of c.1750-70, and the brother on right in ecclesiastical robe. The two men could be twins, they look so much alike. The only story I can tell you is that I found them in France. Full measurements noted on the photos, but those faces are just 1/2" from chin to hairline. Found in France.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type. The snuff box, itself, is in remarkably fine condition for its nearly 300 years of age. The portraits are greatly enlarged for your review, as neither is perfect, yet there are no chips nor hairlines. Each remains under the original matching slightly convex cover glasses. A nice balance to the aperture mounts of 18k are the 2 half-rounds, also of 18k gold. The body of the box is dark, essentially black, and it is Vernis Martin, the layering of paint and varnish. A bit unusual to see that decorative style in a solid dark color like this one. Inner liner is shell, excellent.
