Here we have a charming antique Victorian to early Edwardian era Black Forest hand carved 5 5/8" tall Holy water font or âbenitierâ, a cross with presenting bird perched over an empty nest and foliate accents! Comparatively small, this one stands a mere 5 5/8" tall with a maximum width of 3 1/4" at the bird's wing tips but is as delightful as can be. The bird and nest a popular motif with these old Black Forest fonts, the empty nest serving as the font itself (though, given that itâs in wood, Iâm not sure if Iâd actually use it to hold water due to the possibility of water damage, etc.). Wonderfully carved from one solid block of wood, likely Linden as was common with Black Forest pieces. Lovely! A wonderful decorative and/or devotional piece!
Very good to excellent condition. A few tiny nips to leaf tips and possibly the very tip of the birdâs beak but, as you can see, there are no breaks or repairs to note. There is currently no hanging ring on the back but weâd be happy to add a simple one for you if you wish, just let us know when purchasing. See pictures for all measurements.
