Purchased years ago in France, I am unsure where this one was made. Seems logical to conclude it is French but I feel like it has more of a German 'feel' to it, or Austrian - Prussian. Something in the precision of both the lathe-turned wood box, rounded edging or border of tortoise shell, and the almost heavy manner of applying the gouache to the wafer. I did not take this one apart to investigate, fearing it would crack that perfect shell border/mat. The convex cover glass is also deeper than the usual French from same era. So, I can be wrong. What I am certain of is the beauty of the painting, the rarity of children's portraits, and the presence of almost a smile on this child. Blue-eyed blond darling. Artist did not sign his/her work, so that isn't a clue.
Very good to excellent condition. As is often the case, portraits with children have been so well treasured, and sometimes are mourning objects. We can't know if that darling boy survived or if his likeness was made after he was lost to his family. So many children died of childhood and community disease back then. But here, perfectly preserved, he lives on. Charming! Measurements are noted on the photos.
