Oh, we do get some unusual old treasures now and then. I admit I really do not know much about top hats. I only know they look fabulous on riders in dressage, on gentlemen at Opera and formal events, and on a dressing table. This one is a fine gray/beige felt hat. See the very fine fur that almost feels like silk. The hat has silk rim and a felt band. The inner rim/crown (see, I don't even know how to talk about these) is a soft leather, and interior is beautifully lined in a heavy silk. The maker's stamp remains, and tells us it was hand made by, or marketed through "E. Motsch", located at 40 Avenue George V, Paris. That's a very high end location. The printed monogram remains inside, "P G B".
Good to very good, beautiful from the outside view and in wear. The interior measurement is 22". I'm unsure if that has a size designation but it will help you if you're intending to wear this one. It seems exceptionally well-crafted, entirely by hand. The hat has definitely been worn, and some wear and age show more to the interior leather band, making me think it's been a horseman's or women's hat as I can see some staining perhaps perspiration or hair pomade. It is one of 2 acquired from the same estate. Look for the black beaver fur top hat, too (sold separately).
