Fabulous antique French Napoleon III era Palais Royal style writerâs wax seal, cachet or sceau with solid hand carved mother of pearl handle and hallmarked French silver seal tip with âNAâ or âANâ monogram! Isnât this one lovely. It looks like it would likely have been in a Palais Royal fitted writing and or vanity box. Weâve all seen them, different shapes and styles of inlays to the boxes or chests themselves, the interiors opulently lined & fitted with pearl writing and/or sewing tools. Sometimes we find them with the Palais Royal gold & enamel âpansyâ inset, this one without but surely such a piece. The seal tip is hallmarked French silver, the tiny 'hare' head likely designating that it's in .800 (nearly sterling) silver. There is also a tiny silversmith mark but Iâve not been able to accurately make it out under magnification and so havenât found an exact reference (it looks like "CC", possibly for Charles Cordonnier, Paris circa 1858-1863 but I canât be certain). A lovely desk top decorative piece or, if you're lucky, just the piece you've been looking for to complete the implements in a stunning old Palais Royal box.
Very good condition. Some dark âspotâ marks on one side of the bulbous end of the handle but they appear to be original flaws from the shell used to carve the piece. No chips, cracks, damage or repairs that I can see. See pictures for measurements.
