A bountiful harvest, painting in oil on stretched canvas, and signed by the artist, André Robert. Undated, but these were typically c.1880-1910, and while it seems like a hunting painting, it is of the "Nature Morte" genre, which were humble paintings of the day's harvest in prep for the evening meal - a bit more like a prayer of thankfulness. They usually hung in humble kitchens, usually without frame, just like this one. A pheasant would have been a fine meal, but most other birds were also hunted and the peasants and worker grateful even for a snipe stew. This artist ha painted a bit of a stucco wall behind, and the birds hang by strings to a nail just out of view. The painting genre often done directly onto a panel of wood, and we have a few of those in inventory - rare as they truly are - because they are personal favorites of mine. Prayerful, humility, gratitude. The stretched canvas is 22" x 14".
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, the oil painting does not have any tears or holes in the canvas. No areas of loss to the oil paint. A vibrant palette used, it has a feel of folk art, cabin or lodge art, and I do not know if this artist is listed. I have found a listed "Paul André Robert, (1901-1977), but I believe this painting is a good deal older than would be his work - perhaps a father? A rather raw stretcher frame, but nicely preserved and a charming painting! I found it in France.
