"Donnez par Ané Fayett A le juin 1792" ("Given by Ané Fayett A on June 1792") Fayetteville on June, 1792). I feel certain there's another reading of that handwriting on back of this portrait. I think he is a monk or friar, which doesn't really adapt to ané, which is a donkey. I must have it wrong. : ). The 228 year old painting, however, is both interesting and very well accomplished, and likely that of a monk or religious man, priest or friar. Only very rarely do we see a bald bearded and blu-eyed French miniature, actually, from that era. Monks did shave the tops of their heads, and the clothing also would suggest it. Quite unique.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. I'm sorry, there are some lighting glares on the slightly convex cover glass, but as you can see, nothing detracting on the portrait, itself, which is a wonderful little work of art. In its original wood frame with round brass mat/mounting, it survives the centuries very well The old wafer still has its original vellum backing as you can see. Measurements are noted on the photos for your review.
