An ID'd memorial portrait or copy of same, this handsome dignified military officer seems likely to be the gentleman whose memorial is noted on 2 cut cards tucked in the backside (see images). If so, his mutton chop sideburns are slightly out of date, but the date on the card is May 4, 1844, and the name is George M Kemp, (architect). A benefit of ____ Dow and Family. A quick search reveals it is George M. Kemp, architect of the Scott Monument, Edinburgh, Scotland (born 26 May, 1895, died 6th March, 1844). A notice is added to our listing. The Scott Monument is a Victorian monument to Scottish author, Sir Walter Scott.

Very good to excellent condition with a nod to the possibly flaked darker paint to front of his military jacket, though I'm uncertain if that is as the artist painted it. You decide. Measurements noted on photos. The frame is most unusual, and I'm unsure what the appendages on outer rim. It seems possible it might once have had a brooch back.
