Fabulous antique Victorian era papier English or French papier mache writer's box, a rare standish style with heavy bronze center handle, two gorgeous cut crystal inkwells and ornate hand painted decoration with shimmering mother of pearl inlays! I've had this one on display at my home for years now, the pearl inlays and colorful hand painted decoration are superb and so I keep thinking of reasons why I should keep it but, alas, this is the nature of our business. Fall in love with rare and remarkable finds but only for a short time until it finds a new appreciative owner. This one lovely as can be, in a very unique style with two lids and center bronze handle. The interior still holds the two beautifully shaped & cut crystal inkwells with original papier mache lids, a center stamps compartment with original lid & carved mother of pearl knob or handle and a convex pen tray on the opposite side. Lovely!
Very good condition. There is some glue fortification to the hinge areas, quite common in these papier mache pieces. A few exterior chips, some slight loss or wear to the paint but no missing pearl inlays and no major flaws to note. Both inkwells are free of any larger chips, no cracks, etc. though there may be a tiny nip here and there. See pictures for all measurements.
