Lovely antique French or English Victorian era papier mache 9" writer's chest, an elegant desk box with domed top, double inkwell & stationery fitted interior and mother of pearl & gold enamel decorated exterior! It's been a while since we added some fine old Victorian papier mache items to our shop, but we recently found a few unique treasures and the very fine stationery or writer's desk box you see here is one. Isn't it wonderful! Very Victorian with its domed rectangular lid form and without chips other than two small ones a the rear base corners. The lock works, has the old skeleton key and the inside is entirely intact. Just a lovely old c.1840-50 desk top box for your stationery, business cards, etc..
Very very good condition for age and type. There is some cracking to the mother of pearl inlay in the center top ornamentation and the pieces you see would have originally been painted, too, to look like a bouquet of flowers and that paint (as usual) is worn off over the years. There are no breaks in the box, neither at the rim nor at the hinges where these are often vulnerable. Surface crazing is normal on these and you'll find a little bit of it on this one, but notably free of damage, truly. It's got a nicely sectioned interior for a variety of note cards.
