Rare antique early 1800s French Vernis Martin style oversized 12" tall "miniature" sedan with hand painted & raised gold decoration, original thick beveled glass windows AND what is likely the original 18th century style partial porcelain doll or figure inside, an amazing work with hand painted porcelain bust, head & arms and truly exquisite gold metallic fringed dress! Somewhat of a contradiction to say "large or oversized miniature" but that describes the piece in the context of other sedans we've offered in the past. Leaving the sedan aside, the figure or doll within is another work of exceptional art. I've included several large photos showing the expert detail, magnificent craftsmanship and superb condition that we find it in today. Truly breathtaking! The figure and sedan together, simply wonderful! A miniature version of the extravagance some were afforded and this will definitely be one for the Vernis Martin and/or doll collectors, don't miss it!
Very good condition, age considered. The sedan/box itself has some repairs. The gold trim around the original beveled glass windows is one spot of restoration, there has also been some gold enamel touch-ups to the raised decoration on sides and lid. The door latch works fine and is original, as are the side rail or pole fixtures though the poles or shafts themselves are later restorations. There would have been protruding feet on the base, extending out a bit front and back on each side but they've been broken off over the years. A bit of touch-up to the green paint in areas but well matched in color. The doll or figure within is near pristine with just a bit of age soiling to the dress in spots, a few tears to the mesh and, I believe, one broken figure. Just as you see both the box and figure, the images show all so peruse all and you're sure to be impressed (even with the flaws). See pictures for all measurements.
