Stunning artisan's work on this 19th century work of ebeniste's box by the lauded French cabinetry firm, TAHAN, Paris. Lock plate has the engraved signature, one of the 4-5 best awarded maker's name of 19th century France, and the world. Look closely at the incredibly intricate parquet combining kingwood, ebony, and a small use of ivory. Canted corners and brass pencil edging trim it out, and the box still has the original key in the working lock. At some time in its 170 - 150 years, someone has had it professionally lined, and that lining remains in fine condition. Full measurements are noted on the photos.

Very good to excellent condition throughout, age and type considered. An incredibly intricate parquet work, not a single piece missing or lifted. I can see one small area where a small crack shows and I've marked it with "x" for your review, front left of the top of box. The edging is complete, well-mounted. The working lock retains its original working key. I feel quite certain the box has been re-lined at some point, perhaps 50 years ago. Box dates from Napoleon III era, c.1850-70s and would have been quite a luxurious acquisition then, as now. The name, Tahan, does carry a premium value, particularly to the French who understand the various makers.
