This handsome suite of three original copper engravings comes from the monumental Encyclopédie of Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d'Alembert, published in Paris during the third quarter of the eighteenth century. Drawn by the gifted illustrator Louis-Jacques Goussier and engraved by Robert Bénard, the plates illustrate the craft of the Bourrelier-Bastier, depicting an extraordinary variety of horse harnesses, saddles, and pack equipment with the remarkable precision that made the Encyclopédie one of the greatest publishing achievements of the Enlightenment.

Printed on laid paper and retaining crisp, dark impressions, the engravings possess both historical importance and decorative appeal. Their combination of scientific observation, elegant eighteenth-century engraving, and equestrian subject matter makes them especially desirable for collectors of sporting art, French prints, and decorative interiors. Each page is 15.5" x 10.25", First folio edition: (1762-1772

Condition: Very good antique condition with expected age toning, light handling wear, minor edge creases and gentle waviness consistent with eighteenth-century laid paper. Strong impressions with generous margins. A well-preserved matching set.
