In all my years at this, I've never seen a box like this. Just in from France, it's got a beautiful carved shell cameo up top, side profile. It's also got pretty elaborate overall carved pattern, decorative brass-mounted cabochons of mother of pearl (lots of them) and ornamental brass cartouche and stringing. Even the original working lock has it's key, and the silk interior is still pretty. The cabriole legs are in cast metal. It's got the feel and accents of boxes we've owned before from mid-late 1800s, but that cameo and all the carving is really quite unique. I'm quite sure it's from Italy, several reasons, and I would have to guess it might have been a Grand Tour souvenir.
Very good to excellent condition throughout, not a crack on any of those cabochons of mother of pearl and there are 4 on every side but the back. There is a hairline on the far right side of the shell cameo. I've greatly enlarged it so you can see it. It's tight and fine, but it is there. Beautiful displayed open or closed, isn't it. Measurements are noted on the photos, but it is a nice jewelry box size: 6.5" x 4.5" not counting the added size of the cabriole legs, x 4" tall.
