Wonderful antique Victorian era Black Forest hand carved 9 3/4" desk top thermometer stand, original mercury filled thermometer and very unique pastoral themed cow figures! For anyone who follows the decorating style of Tulsa's Charles Faudree (and I do!), you've seen his own rare Black Forest cows in several homes he's decorated over time. He's got a couple of decorator books out now, and he's always in the magazines we love to look through, from Veranda and Southern Accents to House Beautiful and I think he's even been in Architectural Digest, but not sure. But I digress - what I meant to say is that for years I've been looking at and admiring those wonderful old Black Forest cows. This piece a bit less 'majestic' but those are definitely little cow figures on that large carved base, one grazing near the top, another at rest and even a smaller lamb or possibly herding dog (lower right). A great decorative accent, rare figures and sure to please!
Good-very good condition. The original thermometer and plaque are free from any defects or repairs. A few chip to the wood here & there, the cows' horns and the bottom right corner of the base are most evident. It also appears that there was a standing man at the top left of the carved 'mound', only his feet remain and we can have those carved off & blended if you prefer. See pictures for measurements.
