Another splendid needlepoint sampler, mid-1800s, this one of a family enjoying music, the father seated and the mother with a guitar. Two young children kneel at their feet. Charming domestic scene, fabulous for frame as art or supple and strong enough to be made up into a luxuriously fringed and down-filled decorator throw pillow. Likely the work of a young girl, as she improved her needle arts. Full measurements noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, mostly wool yarns used with some silk. Stitches are all small, less than typical gros point needlepoint, but not really petit point. Canvas is strong and I see no moth or bug damage to the yarns. As you can see from viewing the back, yarns have faded a bit from the original palette, but leave a very pleasing panel. Stong panel, good for either a pillow top or to frame. Found in France, a French family, but mid-1800s - Victorian era (Napoleon III or earlier).
