A woman with her tortoise shell and pearl tiara or mantilla comb, Empire gown and the forward 'spit' curls of the Napoleon era, c.1800-1815. Blue eyes, the beginnings of gray hair worked by the artist. Convex cover glass and brass inner mat on wood frame.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. A glimpse of this society matron in perhaps a state of mourning, the black gown being unusual. One wonders if she mourns her husband, or child, perhaps gone to the Napoleonic Wars. No signature, no id, though it is sealed - sometimes a signature can be found on the very edge of the wafer once out of frame. Cover glass is clean, displays very well. Measurements in full are noted on the photos.
