His fashion and goatee, mustache and hair place him in the Napoleon III era, to perhaps as late as 1900. The fine portrait in oil is done on canvas which remains on its wood stretcher. I've noted the measurement of the painting aperture because it's a little difficult to be certain of the full stretched painting from behind. The gold frame (wood) is overly broad and created a fine display. Full measurements noted on the photos.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type, the heavy large frame remains particularly fine. Do look closely at the photos of the old painting. The light reflects at various angles on the surface of the oil paint and has a look of texture to it outside of the gentleman's portrait. It's not possible for me to be certain, but I would think that indicates some in-painting, a form of restoration. It does show beautifully, and I've had him and enjoyed this painting on our walls now for about 20 years, having found it in France. A very dramatic portrait and a handsome gentleman in tuxedo.
