This is unusual but also pleasing and great for the right decor. It's a 19th century Swiss Black Forest carved game plaque with both duck and pheasant against greenery. It's not usual for these to have been painted as this one is, and almost all we buy, collect, sell are unpainted. Someone has decided to turn this one into a painting and carving, however, and the result is actually quite pleasing. Yes, you could strip it and have the old natural wood (it's a very old one, visible from the backside view). It's large, deep, not quite a life-size carving of the two game fowl, but close. At 15.5" long, 10" wide, large enough to use in a variety of ways, wall to bookshelf, to mantel between candlesticks. They hand upside down, as hunters would hang their 'take' for the day.
Very good condition, the upper portion of the duck's wing is chipped but painted in a manner that feels complete. The long tail feathers of the pheasant are usually a loss, but this one has the entire length of them. Measurements noted on the photos. The carving would date later 1800s.
