Napoleonic era portrait miniature in profile, a woman in high fashion of her era, signed by the artist. During the French Empire, Greek and Roman fashion went through a revival in France with Napoleon's expanding empire's pillaging of statues, art. A classical profile also in revival of those influences. She would have posed in c.1800-1812 or so. Her tiara and the necklace and her hair anchor jewelry all match. The beautiful addition of the red scarf and the tiny forehead and nape of neck curls, also Neo-classical.
Very good to excellent condition throughout. The painting is in very good condition, and is dramatic in a ground of black. She's long been one of my favorites. There is a tiny bit of dust on inside of the convex cover glass and I've never opened the backing to give it a hit of canned air to remove those so they are catching more light from our photo lights. To the naked eye, the dramatic black is black and solid. Displays beautifully. Some evidence on back would suggest she was once mounted on top of a snuff box, by the way. Measurements are noted on the photos.
