French Empire to 2nd Empire ornamental French hair comb, pristine condition and set with many carats of amethyst. Look closely at the crisp edges to the facet-cut gems to affirm they are natural amethyst gems and not simply colored French paste, which would show nips, chips, roughness of its age. The color is beautifully matched. Set into deep oval 'cups', I'm sure it's partly why none have any damage. It's a heavy comb. I think I can find a French silversmith tiny tiny punch but I can't make it out. If so, I'd feel comfortable to say it is silver with 18k gold layer, or 'vermeil'. The quality is certainly there. Very good to excellent condition throughout. The amethyst are in fine condition, facet cuts crisp on all edges, no damage, no chips, no hairlines. Beautifully preserved with only a little bend to some tines which one can straighten out with a little time, tenderness, pliers. One of my favorite gem-set French tiara combs ever!
