An unidentified Royal or Nobleman, c.Louis XIV era, thick long curls are blond and his eyes are blue. I have purchased this portrait from an estate in Germany, and in fact I am not positive that he is not Prussian. The young man wears armor and a red, white and blue broad sash or ribbon along with his ruffled lace collar. I believe this is an early 19th century painting "aprés", or after a more famous large painting, portrait of this young man. Perhaps one of you will be able to identify him. If so, please email us and we'll add the information. The painting is in gouache on wafer and is exceptionally fine. Unsigned, either front or back, but perfectly preserved and undamaged beneath the convex cover glass. Full measurements noted on the photos.

Very good to excellent condition, as noted. Both frame and painting. There is a generous bale up top and a karat gold loop in it. I did not test as I do not think the entire frame is gold, but perhaps a gold wash on brass. Large, it displays just beautifully in a collection of fine miniatures. You can see on the photos the way it is easily opened with the 4 long pins holding it all in place. I see one notable issue, a small area on the cover glass, about the 7 o'clock position, which seems to me to be something like a clear scumble of dried glue, though I suppose it could be a surface abrasion to the glass. it feels like it rises from the glass, but it did not want to let me gently scrape it off. I don't force such things for fear of breaking the old convex glass. It is visible and marked in the open photo.
