Only an old pair of scissors remain, the fittings would also hold a thimble, needle case and bodkin. There's even a velvet pin cushion in the front, lovely! Just in from France and rare, rare, rare. These miniature pieces are highly collectible, wonderful decorative accents in an opulent doll house setting but they're also fabulous as the Napoleon III era sewing pieces that they are. Likely a Palais Royal piece, the style very distinct, very rare and as opulent as they come. I'd not have been surprised if it was a marked Tahan, Vervelle, or Sormani work. The finest! Unfortunate that it's missing most of its sewing implements but, alas, the box itself is exquisite! A white enamel ground trimmed out in navy blue, with floral bouquets surrounding the bulbous bottom half and a charming pair of lovers depicted up top on the lid. Some roughness of age showing on the bottom rim, where it's rubbed surfaces over time, but no chips or cracks or other flaws to note on this fine pot-like box. Nicely fitted, the top fits perfectly and closes snug and tight, yet is easily opened. I've written time and again about how difficult this process is. One 'paints' on the enamel powders which are suspended in a liquid medium that aids in application, but all of the colors are muddy mauve, grey, taupe and blues and nothing at all like the colors that emerge once the kiln has melted the enamel powders into the thick glassine finish that some mistake for porcelain. The work is done on a metal plaque, or in this case, a copper or brass forming the bottom and the top of this box. The artist is apprenticed for years and years before he\/she is adept enough at this arduous and painstaking process to eventuate a finished product like the one we have here. Quite unique, different from many of the enameled boxes we've had over time, and all the more wonderful for its differences.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVery good to excellent for age and type. We find no chips, cracks or even the faint hairlines that so often are to be found on these old enamels. Apparently it has never (yet) been dropped or handled carelessly. The green covering is, of course, the finest belly leather of the stingray. The fittings and cartouche test 18k gold and elevate the museum quality case, as well. The top bale means this one would have once hung from an elaborate 18k gold chatelaine, which sets it apart a bit from the usual vest pocket necessaire. Sadly, it has come to us from France without a single interior fitted tool. Just the openings into which you would have placed them. It is obvious it would have held a pocket knife, a pencil, a small note pad likely and also a measurement tool. This fitted inset helps us visualize this as the necessaire of a gentleman who navigated, or designed, or was architect or military officer or Royal, as it's a writer's fitting. The folding knife would have been to cut a quill for the small pen, I think. Isn't it just exceptional. The interior fittings are not 18k gold. Only those outside and the lip of the top and bottom. Still, look how perfectly preserved it has been for these 250 years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVery good to excellent as you see it, though it lacks the interior tools. Still a superb display etui. I collect these, and it's very rare to find a complete and well preserved shagreen (galuchat is the French word) necessaire. This one hasn't really much disruption at all to the fine stingray belly leather that covers the body of it so perfectly. A work of art, this. And while there is part of the one appliqué of 18k gold missing (see photos of the top half), it really doesn't distract from the overall beauty or importance. Just a bit from the price. One might even wish to have that appliqué re-cast. Such is the importance of this one. If I were younger, I'd take on the project of finding the fittings that will fill it out. The box is oversized, as noted, is in fine condition both inside and out. The interior of these chests, this one particularly, were as important as the exterior, and as you see here, made of beautiful rosewood veneers of finest quality. Boulle style marquetry decorates the lid and cartouche surrounding the escutcheon. This one even has a working lock with skeleton key. Just in from France, this one is not to be missed!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVery good condition. There are a few spots where the brass inlay has lifted a little, right around the key hole and tacked down on a few spots in the lid corner inlays. Some thin brass stringing around the outside of the lid (not the corner edging) has lifted and been glued back down into the grooves. There is also some surface scratching to the lid and wear to the ebonized finish around the center lid cartouche and escutcheon areas from the years of soft polishing. A few other imperfections but, as you can see, it's in remarkable shape with age, etc. considered. Amazing attention to detail and beautifully preserved, obviously cherished works of a true French or English master!  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe earliest that we can date the conception of the inkwell is with the Ancient Egyptians, where members of wealthy or upper-class families hired scribes to write for them. These scribes used small ink palettes housed in pieces of stone with round hollows for each separate colour of ink. Over time, these palettes became larger pieces of stone or clay, and gradually were developed into being containers when a stopper was added to protect and add to the longevity of the ink. In Europe, prior to the sixteenth century, a scribe or scrivener would correspond using a quill pen and ink on behalf of aristocracy, as writing was considered to be a lowly task. As the art of writing traveled across the world animal horns began to be used as the material for making ink containers. To begin with, these inkwells were fairly basic and designed purely for purpose, with little ornamentation. The decorative inkwells were introduced during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Gold and silver inkwells began to make an appearance. During the Baroque period, excessive ornamentation was common throughout Western Europe, as was the fashion within most silverware, jewellery and clothing at this time. The inkwell was then further developed as the portable inkwell was devised around the time of the American Civil war, so that soldiers could carry them easily and write their correspondence from the battlefield. Affluent travelers used inkwells specifically designed to be compact, housed within boxes which also held other writing equipment such as quills, ink, paste papers (used to seal letters) and a sander (to hold a fine sand, sprinkled to prevent ink smearing), medications and toiletries. Such boxes were known as compendiums. The invention of the typewriter in the 1870s spelled the demise of the inkwell, along with the first fully functional and reliable fountain pen being patented by Lewis Waterman in 1884. With increasingly practical fountain pens increasingly being produced in the twentieth century, the demand for inkwells fell to the point of obscurity, now being regarded as a rarity which is only owned by collectors. This set being a stellar example of the opulence of some writing related pieces, exceptional in every way and they really do make the finest decorative accents! I still do!   This one is a RARE Napoleon III era desk top letters or keepsakes chest, accountant's or shop keeper's writing and receipts box in very good exterior condition, an elegant ebonized finished with Charles X style carved ribbed edging, brass strip or string inlays and a large, gorgeous Tahan style cartouche with colorful hand painted flowers on what appears to be opaque opaline glass! Working likely original key remains with it, works just fine. No signature or maker that I can see but the floral cartouche was almost a 'signature' of fine old Tahan boxes \u0026amp; caddies. There is some damage to the moire silk side baffles, splits at corners and one side but it's all original and there's even a little silk pocket in the lid with its own lovely little machined steel clasp (needs no key, just press down on the center pin). The collapsed measurement is 11 3\/4\" x 9\" x 1 7\/8 when flat.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVery good condition. As noted above, there is some damage to the pale blue moire silk accordion style baffles but it will still extend up a few inches. Tears at the corners visible. The exterior of the box itself is in lovely shape, as you can see. There is an ever so slight upward bend to the lid panel but it still closes and locks. The silversmith marks appear to be for Theodor Nugren from the workshop of Pavel Ovchinnikov (c.1830–88), St. Petersburg, Russia, 1899–1908. When it comes to jewelers of the Russian Imperial court, the first name to be mentioned is of course Faberge, which produced gem-encrusted Easter eggs, cigarette cases made of precious metals, and other objects as presents for the royal family and aristocracy. However, there were many other official court jewelers whose skills were equally exquisite. One of those was that of Pavel Ovchinnikov.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePavel Ovchinnikov was appointed official purveyor to the future Tsar Alexander III (1865), King Victor Emmanuel II of Italy (1873), Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolaevich (1878) and King Christian IX of Denmark (1888). He was awarded the Légion d’honneur (1867) and the Order of the Iron Crown (1873). His firm was a trendsetter on the Russian pre-revolution jewelry market. He revived and developed the art of producing enamels. Thin layers of enamel over filigree were applied to the company's dinnerware and icon rizas: the ornament would be created with the use of a silver thread, and the spaces between the individual threads would be filled with enamel of different colors. This was even more complex than the \"stained-glass\" enamel technique pioneered by Ovchinnikov. Without any solid base, this enamel looked like a glass painting in a Gothic cathedral if held up to light. The company also used the ancient niello technique to create engravings of the Kremlin and Moscow cathedrals. One of the firm's most prominent works was a luxurious icon screen, made of silver and gold, for the Kremlin's Dormition Cathedral. Ovchinnikov was one of the first entrepreneurs of the 19th century to realize the importance of artistic education, and he founded a school for talented young people to study goldsmithery for five or six years.   The combination of the zolotnik and city marks together in the oblong oval marking, as seen on this piece, was used between 1882-1899. The \"84\" tells us that the piece is in at least .875 silver (87.5% pure silver so just under the .925 standard for \"sterling\" silver). The hammer \u0026amp; sickle mark to the right of that is for the city of St. Petersburg. Larger than the average snuff box, smaller than the average cigar case, this one is missing the original ribbons on the inside that would have held the cigarettes or cheroots in each side but that's easily fixed if you so wish. The chips are all the old originals. I have not counted them but it is not a full complete set (from experience). The old set of cards is a 19th century sheet-litho printed and colored set that has then been machine-cut. We only rarely see these old ones. Louis XV, known as Louis the Beloved, was a monarch of the House of Bourbon who ruled as King of France from 1 September 1715 until his death in 1774. He was 64 at the time of his death, so for his time quite an old gentleman who would show some aging as we see here in this personal item he's had done as a personal gift, perhaps to his mistress, Madame De Pompadour. We can't know the exact history of this box, however. He succeeded his great-grandfather Louis XIV at the age of five. He is the father of ill-fated King Louis XVI, husband of French Queen Marie-Antoinette. The small box is mounted in 14k gold pique and frame, (acid tested), which surprised me since I would have expected the standard 18k for a French case. An exceptional piece, nonetheless, and important! I've had access to the disbursal of a very important collection of antique snuff boxes out of Paris, and this is one from that exquisite collection. While it must remain anonymous, the history is as charming as is the box.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe snuff box is in very good to excellent condition for age and type. The painting is perfectly preserved beneath the slightly convex and highly polished original cover glass. It appears the gold frame has been removed and re-inserted to the box top, leaving it slightly raised from a flush fit. The box has 2 tiny rim nips, I've marked with \"x\" on a photo to allow you ease in finding them. They're tiny. The outer etui, very unusual to find a snuff box still in one of these, by the way, is in remarkably good form also. The case is leather and has a shrinkage crack in the bottom that is not much of a flaw for a case of this age. The leather is quite solid, stiff, has held up very well. A Master could then evaluate the work, move an apprentice up the skills set as warranted. These served something like a semester's final exam, of sorts. Now, of course, these old pieces are wonderful and sought after to group on a buffet top, or to house and show off collections of small, and of course the doll collectors beg for them, as well. The style of this one is my favorite, as well, with hinged upper cap that folds back and away to reveal storage for your stationery and all inside. One original inkwell of the 2 that would have come with it remains in the chest, as does the old original silk velvet writing surface. It misses a strip there at the fold, but still, better to have the old original cut silk velvet than a replacement. I've cleaned this one up and given the old wood a polish, the brass as well. A nice brass pencil edging and some serpentine motion to the design really sets it off nicely. All hinges are in place, working fine. There is a little disruption to the black wood veneer at the very front right where it meets that brass pencil edging, and perhaps a little other imperfection here or there but not anything serious enough to detract from the beauty, display, use or enjoyment of this old beauty. We half expected to see an engraved lock plate signature by Tahan or Vervelle, Giroux, P. Sormani or one or two other of the noted top makers on this one, it is so fine. But it might well be by one of those and just one that is unsigned. That signature would elevate the price and value for collectors, so this one has the aesthetic at a bit of a bargain price. They didn't put engraved lock plates on every single one. Makers to the King, and to Royals of Europe, the elite of the world, if only we had the rich history this chest could tell us. That piano hinge opens the box to lie flat as you see in our images, and a slide button opens the compartment on the lid side, revealing the shaving mirror and vanity tools. Additionally, they comprise less than 5% of the total of the rather heavy old box. This one has a fine quality traveler's inkwell with it, a flask for liqueur (or cologne), and large powder jar and a rouge pot in addition to the 3 boxes. Fabulous set! We hate the idea of throwing away original pieces to a very old 1870-1900 set. In any case, our photographer has done a fine job of capturing its beauty and charm, AND any very minor tiny hairline in the kiln-fired enamel work, which is magnificent on this little trunk-shaped casket. Measurements are noted on our photos.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNOTE about KILN-FIRED ENAMALS: This process, which I've written about many times, is one only accomplished with the skill of years and years of practice. The enamel powders are various shades of muddy mauve, taupe, blues, not the least resembling the color they will become once the kiln melts them into the glassine or porcelain like finished product you see here. So an artist is layering on stroke after stroke, working quite literally blind as far as the colors and spacing of the finished outcome he\/she hopes to achieve. It is the memory that guides the hand in this art. And subject to such whims of nature and memory, it's always amazing to me that they come out with anything but a glob. I've tried this art, myself, and believe me, it's very difficult. I mostly get globs. The nature of the process is part of the reason why these old kiln-fired objects have such a following and bring the prices they continue to bring.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVery good to excellent condition for age and type. We have no chips or losses and the very slightest of faint hairlines you're able to view in our enlarged photos, but which you'd miss entirely if you found this in a store and used just your eyes. The flaws are very minor and the box presents and displays beautifully. As noted above, I think there was once a push-button latch closure mechanism and that the bottom half has been remounted backwards in the framework to reposition the hole that would have accommodated such a latch so it now is at the back of the casket, below the hinges. The other parts of the set remain, some in less than perfect condition, but for age and type, still very rare to fine. The additional pieces of mother of pearl silk winder and 2 mother of pearl spools trimmed out in 18k gold, along with the gold thimble and also the rather rare addition of the stylus or pencil holder. The cap to the scent bottle is also 18k gold. There are some tiny dents in the old gold cap to that otherwise lovely old perfume bottle, and also in the elongated stylus or pencil holder. Scissors remain sharp, though there is a little darkening to the steel blades (typical of age). The handles to the scissors have a wonderful dolphin motif. Please look over the pieces. The wooden case is in good condition and is original to the set. Mirror in the inner lid is still intact, as well. The processes are very much the same, really, and a dual-industry emerged in this distinct decorative style by the 1800s. They are NOT Manufactory du Sevres items, but from the village artisans, much as the enamels of Limoges emerge in the same village as later decorative porcelain work. The process is very similar, working with muddy porcelain 'slip' and then kiln-firing so that the finished decorative surface emerges upon melting. A very arduous and difficult process here, the emulsions are painted on copper plaques, in this case convex ones - 5 of them in all, and one like this would have gone through numerous kiln-firings to achieve the finished product. Jeweled raised dots of thick enamel add a jewel-like feature. The main purveyor of these in 19th century was TAHAN, a luxury good purveyor and cabinetry shop, and quite regularly I find them still with an engraved lock plate noting TAHAN links. On this one, you find the original TAHAN company paper label there on bottom. Some have it engraved on lock plate, as well. This one is not engraved. The box is large sized as this type of box goes, 5\" x 3.25\" and 3\" high when closed. Beautiful more bronze framework on this one includes heavy solid cabriole legs. All in fine order. I did not polish this one, preferring the old patina. It will brighten to higher gold finish if you choose to use brass polish, however. Will leave that tot your discretion.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVery good to excellent. Just found this one in France, and it has no evidence of restoration. It does have a few very fine hairlines that show up in out photos but far less so to the naked eye so we're not inclined to have them worked over by our professional enamelist. Should our buyer want it perfect, we can offer to have the work done and will pass along the charges. Usually the enamel will show some evidence of mishandling such as hairlines or outright chips. And very often, a good deal of damage in form of chips, shattering. The enamel on these melts to a depth of about 2mm, and is like a glassine or porcelain surface adhering to the copper plaques, so it is subject to cracking or chips. This one hasn't lost so much as a tiny jewel dot as far as I can see. Look it over. Both hinge and clasp are doing their jobs well and are tight, smooth in fit. Interior lining is original and in quite nice form, not stained. No odors. The top with recessed carvings of leaves on the vine, the front and rear canted or beveled panels with song or love birds in the center. The flat top is inscribed \"Carolina Fritschi\", also carved into the solid wood panel. The interior needs lining, it's just plain wood and would likely have had partitions in the base (as evidenced by the marks on the inside of the base) and also probably a lift-out tray for sewing accoutrement or with jewelry fittings. In any event, it's simply magnificent visually and a marvelous decorative piece.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVery good condition. As noted, the interior could be lined in a fabric of your choice or left as is. The hinges have been replaced but with similarly aged ones salvaged from another box. The original lock is intact but the lid portion is missing the pin. There is also a chipped portion to the left front edge of the lid, seen in the images. Makes me worry about the customer! We know antiques, and we don't pass-off later goods for earlier museum pieces. That said, this is a charming old one with both the sliding compartment for a bag of salt, and the appearance, at least, of a drawer, though it's just for looks. The glass knob is a lovely feature. Why a salt box? You know that before refrigeration, a relatively modern invention, meats and fish were cured for longer storage by salting them and drying the meat. Salt was a staple in society, and has such an interesting history. But I digress (I'm prone to telling the stories, aren't I). The Country French decor just begs to have a salt box\/cabinet in the kitchen, either standing or hung on a wall. This will be a perfect one for someone. These are difficult to find, also. There are 20th century \"fakes\" on the market, too, and I suppose they'll eventually be antiques.   I found this one and another slightly older from an estate in France. This is an 1870s snuff box, done in the then brand new invention of Cellulose nitrate, a highly acclaimed and utilized mimic for tortoise shell and ivory and mother of pearl as they became difficult to supply in later 1800s. This one mimics blond tortoiseshell, to a greater or lesser effective result, arguably. The cover glass has perfectly protected the portrait miniature (on card) that is housed within. This type of portrait miniature would have been done as a Grand Tour tourist trade souvenir, and the subject shown here is a stylized image after a portrait of Marie-Antoinette by artist, Vigee LeBrun.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVery nice condition on the hand painted portrait. Working original key remains with it, works smoothly. No signature on the lock plate on this one, but it's a fine quality 19th century box. The collapsed measurement is 12\" x 9.5\" x 1.5\", fully expanded, the height is nearer 6-7\".\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVery good to excellent condition for age and type. No missing brass, no missing veneer, satin-like finish that begs the touch. Working lock and original ornamental key. The interior's original red leather baffled lining is fully intact, though as you can see, there is a little split at one or two old fold or end points (otherwise superb). The interior lid has a splendid leather folio for a writer's or business person's stationery or receipts, and the capacity of interior varies based on how much in placed inside, up to a maximum of about 2 reams of type paper with it fully expand. It's there on the inner lip of the bottom half, where it closed into the upper hinged top portion, and it's a small profile mark that guarantees it as a .800\/1000 purity of silver, made in France between 1818-1838. It is in the earlier style favored by Marie-Antoinette, and developed by the brothers Martin, which was a method of layering paint and varnish to get a depth of image and for decorative objects like this one. Your visit to Versailles might have been your first experience with such decorative style, and it's there en masse in the rooms mid-late 1700s, from large wall panels to small vanity items. The style has come to be known as Vernis Martin. The eventual darkening of the varnish usually has given this vibrantly colorful painting style a warmth in yellowing and you can see that result in this lovely small item. The outer wrapping is probably leather, most likely fine shagreen (skin of sting ray) based on the age of this one. And it is the leather that holds the painting. The item is an etui (small case) or \"necessaire\" which item would hold items necessary such as the note card that is still in place within this one. That card might have originally been a dance card or carnet du bal, or might have been just a daily agenda for a lady's (or fine gentleman's) visiting schedule of the day. Something like a forerunner of our daytime's of the 1980s and our iPhones of present time. A charming collection item, we find these in almost all museum collections. I'm writing this listing from Berling, and just saw a collection of these on display in the palace here. You see that there is some loss to the layered paint and varnish , but not a lot of loss considering the type item (used often and in vest or hand) The silver is marked, is .800\/1000 pure silver and is French made, as noted. The silver is not damaged though it could use a good polish. The inner card, original and 1700s, is without cracks, chips or loss. This one survives well, with nearly all of the old original painted and varnish layered surface intact and in fine form and professionally touched up so it's really quite fabulous. The motif on back is the crossed French torches we see carried throughout the French Empire era, as well, but the old courting scene reminds us of the 1700s art of Fragonard, Boucher and the Romantic movement in art, works of which can be found on display in the Louvre today, and in other museums.
