Fine antique Victorian to early Edwardian era Black Forest hand carved 11.5" tall jewelry box, a 4-tier chest with six fold-out compartments, foliate accenting and scrolled front feet! Normally we find these topped with a large figural grouping, most often birds and hunt type deer, chamois or mountain goats, more rarely pastoral figures like goats, dogs & foxes, etc. “Black Forest” refers to the Schwarzwald region of southern Germany, which became famous in the 19th century for highly skilled woodcarving, cottage-industry production (family workshops and export luxury goods for Britain, France, and the U.S. By the Victorian period, Black Forest carving had become extremely fashionable, especially among the middle and upper classes. A lovely larger chest here!
Very good condition, age & materials considered. As noted, this one may have had a figural grouping on top originally, now with a rather modest rectangular floral & foliate plaque. The exterior is in wonderful shape, possibly a small nip or two but, as you can see, it's been well cared for over its 100+ years. Original front scrolled feet, the rear feet have been lost over the years and replaced with two similarly aged turned wood feet (one broken but repaired with steel rod & glue). Interior is pristine with original tufted red silk or satin linings. All hardware, lock, etc. are original but it does not have a key. See pictures for all measurements.
