An absolutely fabulous hand carved lamp, 2 lions and a tree, natural setting. It's drilled for lamp apparatus. We purchased it in France years ago (working through crates of unlisted antiques) I had meant to turn this one back into a lamp, but we'll leave it to you. Very simple to do! It is large and impressive. Chinoise or Japanese, I'm unsure of which, but it fits into any well-appointed home. The carved base is 7" x 5" and very solid. All you need do is set a lamp kit you can buy at any hardware store, then choose a wonderful silk shade, or perhaps a French Toile, since that would be very traditional for this type 19th century item, too. The style of decor was popularized by Empress Eugenie, wife of Louis-Napoleon (Napoleon III), the last Emperor of France. C. 1850-90, you see the Chinoiserie style in her rooms at the Palace at Fontainebleau, just a short train ride outside of Paris.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type. Entirely hand carved, it's really a work of sculptural art. I've noted measurements and shown how the lamp holes are already drilled (photos). I find no chips, no cracks in the old wood, which I think is teak, though I'm always insecure about wood identifications. Gorgeous old thing, well cared for. When I found it in Paris, it was set up with very early French wiring, very old and silk-wound and tattered. We removed that when purchased, intending to re-wire for USA. But our antiques sell worldwide, so we'll leave it as you see it and allow next owner to do it right for their location.
